2016 Summer Excitement for Princeton Public Schools
Dear Princeton Community,
The summer of 2016 has been one of excitement for Princeton Public Schools. Here are a few highlights:
Princeton Primary School Open for Teachers and Staff
Monday was a big day for the Primary School; teachers were allowed to enter the building to get ready for the school year. The doors opened at 7:00 AM, and there were people there at 6:30, so eager to enter the building. They have waited a long time for this day!
Roll Out of One to One Digital Learning Initiative
All students in grades 3, 6, 7, and 9 will be receiving electronic devices this year. At first, the students will use them at school, as they learn digital literacy and responsibilities. Then there will be parent meetings to get us all on the same page, as their children begin to use the school-owned device as their own. Midway through the school year, it is expected students will be able to bring home their devices. For more information, contact Eric Simmons at 763-389-6163.
New District Website
Our district website is getting a facelift. The intent is to ease navigation and put key items on the front page. In conjunction with the website facelift, we will be engaging the public and our staff to find our brand. This will take place at our grand openings. For more information, contact Gwen Anderson at 763-389-6199.
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics
We are entering the second year of this program which is offered for every middle school student. It started with a required STEM course for all eighth graders. Then last year cross curricular STEAM activities were begun. This year there will be even more of these activities offered for our students, as they learn to be 21st century learners!
Did you know 15 out of 20 future jobs will have a STEAM focus? The lessons the students participate in are based on the fields of discovery and invention. These experiences will provide a connection to their own college and careers. For more information, contact Dan Voce at 763-389-6750.
Spanish Immersion Program
Language immersion is an approach to second language instruction in the usual learning activities and Minnesota State Content Standards are conducted in a second language. Immersion classes follow the same curricula as those in non-immersion classrooms.
This is the second year of the program. We have a four year old class at the Family Center, two sections of Kindergarten at the Primary School, and two sections of first grade at the Primary School. Each year, we will add another grade level, through fifth grade. This year we have an Amity Intern, Anna Torres Canut, who is a person from Barcelona Spain. She is a licensed teacher in Spain, who will assist in the Primary School classrooms. Living with a Princeton family, she hopes to experience the American culture during her year here.
For more information, please contact Gwen Anderson at 763-389-6199 regarding the Four Year Old Program or Greg Finck at 763-389-6902 for the Kindergarten and First Grade Programs.
PreK-12 District Gifted and Talented Coordinator
Last year we had school coordinators who were full time instructors with a passion for serving students who are accelerated. This year we will have those coordinators as well as a PreK-12 District Gifted and Talented Coordinator, Samantha Heitke. She will be working with the school-based coordinators, developing our PreK-12 programming. For more information, please contact Andrea Preppernau at 763-389-7271.
Department of Student Services
We have a new department at Princeton Public Schools: Department of Student Services. This particular department will include Princeton Online Academy, the Princeton Area Learning Center, Care and Treatment, and Special Education. We are hoping to align academic interventions for our students in most need. For more information, please contact Erin Dohrmann at 763-389-6191.
Did you know we often pick up students beyond our district borders, so as many students as possible may take advantage of our innovative programs? We have pick up sites in Zimmerman, Milaca, Pease, and Cambridge. Availability is decided on a case by case basis. Contact Michelle Czech at 763-389-6183 for more information.
With all of the new and renovated buildings, we have new names of district facilities as well:
